FAQ

What is Paper Rally?

Paper Rally is a motorcycle rally where everything is done without the modern tools used by most LD riders.

Ok, but what does that mean?

It means, there will be no use of GPS, auxiliary fuel, or some of the other features now found on most LD bikes.  The use of a GPS during the rally will be prohibited; use of said device will result in a score multiplied by –1.  The use of a fuel cell will result in a letter F by your score.  This way people can see how you would have finished had you not gotten caught cheating.  Of course we can’t be everywhere, but then that would be cheating anyway and you don’t want to do that do you?

But why?

To see who can still navigate using paper maps, and if you can still change your route halfway through the event without the use of a machine.

What happens if my motorcycle has a built in GPS?

You will have to find a way to cover the GPS so that it is not visible and prove to the Rallymaster that you can't use the GPS.  You’re better off using a bike without a GPS.

What about computers, can we use those?

Feel free to plan a route using a computer since it will be impossible to control that aspect.  No use of a computer with a GPS will be allowed during the rally.

What kind of maps will we need?

The Paper Rally will be planned using AAA maps.  Most state maps should have similar roads and places on them.  We may try and obtain maps from the states bonuses will be located in.  If you have problems obtaining maps of the area we maybe able to obtain maps for you at cost.

What areas will I need then?

Since the rally starts and ends in Maryland you can safely assume that the bordering states will come into play.  Outside of MD, DE, PA, VA and WV locations will probably still be found on those maps.

Why are the bonus locations not being given out?

Because this is supposed to be a more difficult rally, this means no week to plan a route.

What is the difference between a fuel cell and auxiliary tank?

I don't know if there is real difference.  For the purpose of the rally they are the same.  The rider may not use any extra fuel outside of the OEM gas tank.

My auxiliary tank is hard to take off, do I have to remove it?

No, removal of any extra tanks is not needed.  However we will know if you used your tank by the amount of gas you put in at each stop.
